The goal of the UCLA Physiology Outreach Program is to provide high school students in Los Angeles with the opportunity to experience experimental research first hand in UCLA laboratories. By engaging youth populations while they are deciding their futures, we aim to cultivate a general interest in higher education and biological sciences.

We know that hidden talent lies on our doorsteps within Los Angeles communities: we want to mobilize and grow this talent pool, make science accessible, and provide new opportunities for learning, career development, and growth. We have focused initially on biology and physiology.

Our home institution is the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), one of the world’s leading universities located in the heart of Los Angeles and its varied communities. Participating faculty are members of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

We are indebted to the many high schools, teachers, and UCLA faculty that have worked with us for over 10 years. We look forward to forming new partnerships with teachers, philanthropists, and community leaders in the Los Angeles area.

Thank you and best wishes!

What is physiology?

Physiology is the study of life and how organisms work. As such, it is a fundamental biological science and forms the basis of modern medicine and our quest to tackle disease. Modern physiology is intertwined with biology, chemistry, physics, maths, and medicine. Physiology involves studies of molecules, cells, organs, and whole organisms.
